A recent Gallup poll reveals a dramatic shift: fewer than half of Americans now say religion is important in their daily lives — a drop of 17 points in just the past decade. Can AI make us "live" forever?

Are We Trying to Outsmart Grief?

Every now and then something crosses my screen that just stops me in my tracks. This week it was an advertisement for a brand-new AI app—created by a former Disney Channel actor—that promises to let you create a talking, interactive avatar of someone who has died.

The promo video shows a woman speaking to a digital recreation of her deceased mother—an avatar generated from just three minutes of video footage. The avatar appears at life events for decades to come: birthdays, holidays, even the birth of her grandson. At the end of the ad, the company declares:

“With three minutes, you can make someone last forever.”

For someone who has spent decades walking alongside families in grief, that line hit me hard.

Because I understand the longing behind it. The desire for just one more moment… one more chance to hear a familiar laugh… one more chance to say thank you, or I love you, or I’m sorry. Those feelings are real and they run deep.

The Internet’s Reaction Was Immediate

The ad went viral—over 22 million views—and the backlash was fierce. People called it dystopian, manipulative, even “evil.” Many compared it to an episode of Black Mirror, where a grieving girlfriend creates an AI replica of her boyfriend after he dies, and, not surprisingly, it ends in tragedy.

Critics used words like:

“Dehumanizing”
“Profiting off grief”
“My value dies with me. I’m not an avatar.”

That’s a strong reaction, and it tells us something important:
People are afraid that technology might replace the real human process of grief.

The Real Danger

Grief hurts because something permanent has happened. A life has ended. And there is a sacredness in that finality.

The emotional work of grief isn’t something we can bypass, no matter how advanced the technology becomes. In fact, trying to avoid the pain only prolongs the suffering.

But trying to digitally resurrect someone who’s gone is a line we should approach with caution and respect.

�� What Is Natural Organic Reduction?

Natural organic reduction is a compelling, eco‑friendly funeral option that harnesses natural decomposition to transform a human body into soil. Typically, a body is placed in a vessel with wood chips, alfalfa, and straw.

Over about 30–50 days, microbes break all tissues down into roughly one cubic yard of nutrient dense soil—ideal for tree planting or land restoration. House Bill HF2669 and Senate Bill SF3134 were introduced to authorize "natural organic reduction." Sponsors included Rep. John Huot and Sen. John Marty. The legislation was spearheaded by Carolyn Laine, former Minnesota House Representative and Senator, who is a passionate advocate for empowering Minnesotans with end-of-life options.

2. Advocacy & Expert Testimony

Equipped with science, safety data, and heartfelt stories, a panel including former MN Rep. and Senator Carolyn Laine ; licensed funeral director and University of Minnesota educator Janet McGee ; Entrepreneurship and Innovation program manager and LiveOn founder, Erik Halaas ; and Interra’s own Vice President and Communications Director, Taelor Johnson , testified before Minnesota House and Senate committees.

Taelor shared the remarkable story of Steve Wheeler , a kind and brilliant social studies teacher from Lake Elmo who was diagnosed with terminal cancer but was unhappy with the burial and cremation pre-planning options avaiable to him. Steve had heard a panel of speakers on the radio discussing NOR and he thought that was the disposition method for him! But he quickly realized it wasn't legal in Minnesota. So Steve went searching for a green burial as an alternative, and in March of 2023, found Interra.

Coincidentally, three days before Steve reached out to Interra to make a plan, Taelor had been at a body composting conference in Denver, and created a partnership with Return Home from Washington state to make terramation available at home in Minnesota. (It was truly a cross-country endeavor.) When Steve called three days after the conference and told Interra funeral director, Mandy Stafford, that what he really wanted was to be composted, Mandy said, "We can do that."

So Steve became the first person to pre‑arrange terramation in Minnesota with Interra—even though the law didn’t yet allow composting locally. Then a year later, in March 2024, and through heartfelt testimony of Steve’s story, Taelor helped lawmakers see the real-world need: green burial alternatives Minnesota can embrace.

3. Final Approval in Spring 2024

After committee negotiations—and collaboration with the Minnesota Funeral Directors' Association to fine-tune language, licensing, facility safety, and compost quality standards—the bills were folded into Minnesota’s 1,430‑page omnibus tax bill. On May 19, 2024 , the legislature passed it, and on May 24, 2024 , Governor Tim Walz signed it into law.

4. Effective July 1, 2025

Although the law was passed in May 2024, it includes an implementation timeline: natural organic reduction becomes legal in practice starting July 1, 2025 . However, the Minnesota Department of Health is still actively working on rulemaking that will need to be finalized before a provider can build and operate a licensed facility here in Minnesota. Taelor is part of the group of stakeholders collaborating with the MDH to make the rules fair, functional, enforceable, and most of all, focused on safety.

⚠️ What Comes Next: Minnesota Department of Health Rulemaking

So, even though NOR is legal, licensed facilities can’t operate yet . The Minnesota Department of Health is currently finalizing rulemaking—setting standards for:

Facility design and zoning
Vessel specifications for composting human remains
Worker safety and sterilization protocols
Identification, tracking, and recordkeeping procedures

This regulation phase is crucial. For now, no in‑state provider or facility can be licensed. But once these rules are finalized, Minnesota will see its first licensed NOR providers .

�� Honoring Steve Wheeler: A Trailblazer for Terramation in Minnesota

Steve Wheeler’s courage continues to inspire. He pre‑arranged his NOR in March 2023, then sadly passed away in September of that same year. With Interra’s coordination, his body was sent to Washington for composting at Return Home—fulfilling his final wish. Taelor and Mandy from Interra traveled to Seattle to be at this pioneer's laying-in ceremony.

His willingness to try something tested but new and to allow Interra to interview him and share his recorded story, played a significant role in the Minnesota NOR journey , reminding legislators that this is not abstract policy—terramation can be deeply personal and transformational.

Most often (42%), it's adult children planning services for their parents, followed by spouses (24%). This confirms what we've always believed: funeral planning is a family decision, often navigated by those experiencing profound role reversals or the sudden absence of a life partner.

We've also noticed evolving preferences in how families choose to remember their loved ones. While cremation has become the most requested option (42%), traditional burial remains deeply meaningful for many families (28%). What's particularly exciting is the growing interest in our eco-friendly options , which now represent 10% of our services.

Innovation Meets Tradition

At Interra Green Burial by Mueller Memorial, we celebrate progress—especially when it means more people have access to personally meaningful end of life options. That’s why we’re thrilled to share the news: Georgia has just become the 13th state in the U.S. to legalize Natural Organic Reduction (NOR) , also known as body composting.

NOR is a respectful, science-based process that gently transforms a body into nutrient-dense soil over the course of several weeks. Instead of using fire or chemicals, the body is placed in a vessel with organic materials like wood chips and straw. Through carefully monitored natural aerobic decomposition, the process creates safe, usable compost that can nourish the earth—a full-circle return.

And while every provider may use slightly different techniques, all NOR systems rely on the same proven principles of thermophilic (heat-loving) decomposition. The result? A beautiful, tested, and safe end product: rich soil that brings new life to forests, gardens, and conservation land.

NOR is Coming to Minnesota

Closer to home, we’re proud to say that Minnesota will officially legalize NOR on July 1, 2025. Thanks to grassroots advocacy and education—including efforts from Interra Green Burial by Mueller Memorial, NOR Minnesota, Live On Minnesota, the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association, the Minnesota Department of Health, former MN Senator Carolyn Laine, and current legislators—Minnesotans will soon be able to choose NOR as a legal, licensed form of disposition.

Prior to July 1 2025 the MN Department of Health (MDH) has been working with the local stakeholders mentioned above, as well as current providers from other states to complete MDH rulemaking that will create licensing, building, and operating standards for NOR in Minnesota.

When Will We Have Body Composting in Minnesota?

Soon, but probably not on July 1 ^st 2025. We expect that there will be a gap between when the Minnesota Department of Health rules are finalized and when an organization will break ground on the first NOR facility in Minnesota. There will be significant investment necessary for setting up a building, staff, and process, as well as acquiring a site for utilizing donated compost.

Interra will continue to provide NOR for our community with our partners in Washington state until we have a safe, trustworthy partner provider here in Minnesota.

What you should know about grief.

Why Grief Can’t Wait

If you’ve ever lost someone close to you, you already know — grief doesn’t follow a script. It doesn’t wait until it’s convenient.
It hits like a wave, sometimes when you least expect it. And it’s different for everyone.

What we’ve learned over the years — especially during and after the pandemic — is just how important it is to recognize a death right away.

That’s what I want to talk about today.
The importance of timing, of gathering, and of making space for grief when it’s most needed — not when it’s easy or when schedules line up.

Because grief can’t wait. And a funeral? It’s not just tradition. It’s something the human heart needs.

When the pandemic first hit, we were told to wait.
"We'll do something later," they said. "When it’s safer."

And so many families did — they waited weeks, months, sometimes even longer.

But what we saw was that when the time finally came to gather, grief had already gone underground.
The loss wasn’t acknowledged properly.

Friends and family had started to move on with their lives.
And the support that people needed most had already faded away.

We learned something very important:
Grief doesn’t hit pause just because the rest of the world does.
And waiting often makes the loneliness heavier, not lighter.

Here’s what we know now — and what, deep down, we’ve always known:
When someone dies, the most critical time to hold a service is within the first 10 to 12 days .
We call this the acute loss period .

It’s that window where your world feels upside down.
You’re tired. You’re overwhelmed. You’re still trying to understand that the person you love is really gone.

Your brain knows it happened — but your heart doesn’t feel it yet.
And that's normal.

You know, I like to explain it this way:
If my leg were amputated — if I physically lost it — I could look down and see that it’s gone.
There would be no denying it.

And yet, even with that clear visual confirmation, my brain would still send signals that my toes itch, or that my foot hurts.
That’s real. It’s called phantom pain .
It’s the brain trying to catch up with a loss that doesn’t make sense yet.

Now, if that’s what happens with a physical loss, imagine what happens with an emotional loss.
When someone we love dies — someone we’ve hugged, laughed with, shared life with —
our brains don’t automatically comprehend that loss either.

It takes time.
It takes recognition.
It takes gathering .
It takes witnessing what happened with the people around us.

The acute loss period is nature’s way of helping us start to process it — so that our minds and hearts can begin to align.
And funerals are a vital part of that.

Without a funeral — or if we wait too long — grief can get stuck.
We stay in a suspended state where the loss never feels real.
We feel isolated.
Friends and family, who wanted to help, assume too much time has passed and that maybe we want to be left alone.

How Many Gallons of Embalming Fluid Are Really Buried Each Year In the US?

A Closer Look at This Commonly Used Statistic

When we talk about sustainable final disposition options , one statistic is frequently presented but often seen with wide variation, the question of how many gallons of embalming fluid are buried each year in the United States.

The answers found can vary from “800,000 gallons” (1) to “4.3 million gallons” (2). The latter number, frequently mentioned by journalists and authorities in the green burial space (3,4), is attributed to Mary Woodsen of Cornell University.

The 4.3 Million Gallon Statistic

However, after extensive searching and resorting to asking the power-brain of AI, it seems there isn't a direct link to a specific, detailed study by Mary Woodsen on this topic publicly available online.

Chat GPT4 said, “The statistic about the use of embalming fluids and other materials in U.S. burials is frequently mentioned in various sources connected to the Green Burial Council and related sites, but these mentions do not link directly to an original research document.” A request to the GBC for the source article of the statistic did not receive an immediate response, however, through the GBC’s reputation there is no doubt that it does exist.

Regardless, the statistic is worth reviewing. The 4.3 million gallon statistic can be found quoted as far back as 2018 (3) and the cremation rate has increased in the last six years. So how can we use readily available data to substantiate a more current estimate of how many gallons of embalming fluid are buried in the US each year?

Necessary Information

To create a more current estimate we need to use some statistics.

The US Census Bureau estimates the 2023 United States’ population to be just below 335 million. (5)
The CIA World Factbook estimates the 2023 death rate in the United States to be 8.4 per 1000. (6)
So that means in the United States there will be roughly 2.81 million deaths in a year.

Also;

According to the National Funeral Directors’ Association, the estimated burial rate for 2023 is 34.5% (7), so 34.5% of the 2.81MM deaths result in roughly 971,000 burials.
Of those 971,000 burials which could involve embalming, 54,600 would likely be subtracted, representing .0084 (the national death rate) of the 6.5MM practicing Jewish Americans (8) who would likely not be embalmed, as well as the 31,080 of the 3.7MM practicing Muslim American population (9) who would also not be embalmed. (The customary death rites for practitioners of Hinduism and Buddhism rarely involve embalming.)

How Many Burials Do Not Involve Embalming?

This leaves 885,320 burials with possible embalming. According to former Green Burial Council President, Ed Bixby it’s estimated that 8% of people choose green burials . (3) Whether that includes those people buried without embalming in the Jewish and Muslim traditions, he did not specify, but if we’re generous and say it is 8% of people already choosing burial and are in addition to Jewish and Muslim burials, that would subtract another 70,825 from annual embalmings. This would mean, in the United States there are an estimated 814,500 burials with embalming per year.

How Many Gallons Of Embalming Fluid Are Used Per Person?

Roughly three gallons are used. What percentage of that is formaldehyde depends on the practitioner and what someone considers “embalming fluid”. Rarely, practitioners will use undiluted embalming solution, but the vast majority use a diluted solution.

What Is Embalming Fluid Made Of?

There are generally 16oz of concentrated embalming solution diluted with 112 oz of water to create one gallon of usable embalming fluid. So, each gallon of commonly used embalming fluid is more than 87.5% water.

Each manufacturer has a proprietary formula to their 16oz concentrated embalming solution, but according to manufacturer, Dodge’s Safety Data Sheet (10) for their commonly used Metasyn Normal concentrated embalming solution, 1.6-4 oz. (10-25%) is formaldehyde, a regulated carcinogen. Other regulated substances included are up to 0.8 oz each of methanol and propylene glycol, neither of which is a regulated carcinogen.

How Much Embalming Fluid Is Used Per Body?

There is a broad rule of thumb that one gallon of embalming fluid is used per 50 pounds of body weight. But the amount of embalming fluid used also depends on the size of the person. In practice, it generally works out to an average of about 3 gallons of embalming fluid per body, of which up to 12 oz is formaldehyde.

How Many Gallons Of Embalming Fluid Are Buried Each Year In The US?

Each year an estimated 2,443,500 gallons of embalming fluid are buried in the United States. This amount is reached from an estimated 814,500 burials with embalming per year, times three gallons per body. Of those 2,443,500 gallons of embalming fluid used, there are generally up to 4 oz of formaldehyde per gallon, which means roughly 97,740 gallons of formaldehyde are buried with embalmed bodies in the US each year.

Room For Improvement

To improve the reliability of this statistic, it would be useful to see a broad survey of funeral practitioners to determine; a more representative average dilution ratio of bottle of concentrated embalming solution to water, how much diluted fluid is used per body, and the current rate of unembalmed/ ecological burials being performed across all religious and ethnic populations.

Statistics used to make a point matter, so it would be beneficial to have a researcher or institution revisit the question of annual embalming fluid use in the US so we’re providing accurate, up-to-date information to the people just joining the green burial and sustainable disposition conversations. This is also true for concrete or metal outer burial containers and vaults which can regularly weigh 1300-3000 pounds.[2]
